The audacity to call yourself "Artist"
Week 1 of the Artist's Way this Sunday for paid subscribers.
Hello friend,
Keeping it short & sweet this week, much like our little one who we’re celebrating this weekend. It’s easier to choose a theme, find an outfit, and buy plastic trinkets than it is to face the tsunami of emotions that your baby is no longer a baby.
I’ve changed my habits immensely over the last 6 months. More awareness around my stressors and how I respond to them (less alcohol, more movement). I’m very proud of this. But then a big week like this happens — kindergarten screening, the first week of The Artist’s Way, birthday party prep — and I’m thrown back to old habits (more alcohol, less movement).
When I can’t wrap my head around my heart, I work. Nonstop. On anything. I tackle the task list with vengeance. I fix things for EVERYONE, especially those not asking for it. I am bitter with clipped words; a filter does not exist. I come up with projects that must be implemented NOW. Where is everyone when I’m TELLING YOU THE BEST IDEA I’VE EVER HAD FOR YOU, WHY WON’T YOU LISTEN?!
The benefit of these bad habits is that I have a few things to share before I transform into the princess’s lady-in-waiting for the weekend.
Studio things
🌊 Part of my week was cold-calling/DM’ing a few shops to say, My prints could look great in your shop. The AUDACITY. It’s required really, now reply to my email you busy shop owners! Maybe there’s a better way, more gently? More firm?
🌷 Now offering Design Consultations. If you have a small business with a small budget but want to make your digital footprint more cohesive, you’ll benefit from a consult with me. It’s a quick way to solidify your Brand Kit with elements you already have. Once Wildflower Farm gets back to me on hers, I’ll share what we came up with.
🎨 River & I were in a Tiny Art Show at our local library! I ran into another local artist who was challenging herself to paint a 3”x 3” canvas for the show because she usually paints large canvases of abstracts with her hands, no paintbrushes. We had a lovely chat about The Artist’s Way. If I see you in person, good luck. You’ll be asked about this book. ha.
I’m feeling more like an artist, even without touching paint or canvas. For so long I’ve insisted on being a designer, NOT an artist; very specific about that. But now I wonder, why?
Very often audacity, not talent, makes one person an artist and another a shadow artist — hiding in the shadows, afraid to step out and expose the dream to the light, fearful that it will disintegrate to the touch. – The Artist’s Way
What is 1 tiny thing you can do this weekend that your inner Artist would enjoy?
✌🏼 In peace & art,
